Icodextrin (INN, USAN) is a colloid penetrant derived from maltodextrin, used in peritoneal dialysis in the form of an aqueous solution, after laparoscopic surgery to reduce postoperative adhesions (between tissues and organs fibrous bands formed).

Icodextrin is contraindicated in patients with cornstarch allergy, maltose or isomaltose intolerance, glycogen storage disease, or severe lactic acidosis.

Adverse reactions include peritonitis, respiratory tract infection, hypertension (high blood pressure), rash, and headache. Of these side effects, only hypertension and rash occurred significantly more frequently than with glucose solutions; the other events appeared to be related to peritoneal dialysis in general.

Icodextrin peritoneal dialysis solution is a new type of peritoneal dialysis solution that uses icodextrin instead of glucose. Its main component is not glucose, but a starch-type water-soluble glucose polymer, which is basically not absorbed by the human body, so it will not Raise blood sugar, especially suitable for diabetic patients with peritoneal dialysis.
